Welcome to week 22 of your pregnancy. You may now be able to hear your baby’s heartbeat with a stethoscope. You may also feel your first mild, practice contractions.

5 months and 2 weeks. You have 18 more weeks to go!

Now that you’re 22 weeks pregnant, your baby’s height is approximately 10 3/4 inches from the top of the head to the heel. This week, the baby weighs around 16 3/4 ounces. Your baby has finally broken the 1-pound mark. That’s approximately the size of a papaya.

Your Baby’s grip, vision and hearing are stronger

Baby’s tear ducts are developing and has developed a sense of touch, which means he might be experimenting with this new sense by stroking a body part that he happens to reach or sucking his thumb.

Your baby may be able to hear sounds faintly from inside your body, such as your breathing, your heartbeat, and your digestion.

What’s happening in my body?

As your bump becomes more protruding, you might find that people are able to tell that you’re pregnant. This new stage in your life seems more real for you. If you’re like many expectant women, you’ll discover that feet get bigger too.

Week 22: Your Symptoms

Many people feel good in the middle of the second trimester, but there are still some bothersome things that can appear. Below are symptoms you might experience during week 22:

  • Acne
  • Protruding navel
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Abdominal pain
  • Pelvic pressure
  • Changes in vaginal discharge
  • Heartburn
  • Racing heart

Acne: Increased oil production may cause you to develop acne.

Racing heart: Your heart is pumping up to 30 to 50 %  more blood now that you’re pregnant. More oxygen and nutrients are being delivered to your baby via the placenta. For this reason, having a racing heart can be normal during pregnancy.

Heartburn: It’s quite common during pregnancy because some hormones relax the valve that usually keeps the acids out. It’s perfectly normal to find yourself wanting to devour the contents of your kitchen cabinets and fridge, after all, you have a growing baby to feed! But eating small meals throughout the day, staying upright after eating a meal, and avoiding spicy and fried foods might help.

Hemorrhoids: Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in and around the anus and lower rectum. To ease the discomfort of hemorrhoids’ during pregnancy:

  • Soak in warm water.
  • Avoid sitting for long periods of time.
  • Use an over-the-counter remedy
