I have heard a lot of women complain about growing thick and lustrous hair during pregnancy only for it to start falling off right after while breastfeeding.
Telogen Effluvium, also known as postpartum hair loss is relatively common affecting 40-50% of women. Postpartum hair loss occurs after childbirth because of the sudden change of hormones in your body, particularly the change between progesterone and estrogen.
How to beat Postpartum Hair Loss
1. Protective hairstyles
You may need to change your hairstyle to protective hairstyles. Avoid putting more pressure on your hair or making the problem worse by avoiding tight, pulled back styles such as ponytails and topknots.
2. Drink enough water
I can’t over-emphasize this. Drinking enough water will help your lactation, hydrate your body and cleanse your system.
3. Castor Oil
This is one oil mums swear by when growing their hair after delivery. Massage a good volume into your scalp and gently comb out with a wide-toothed comb. Skip the styling and pony tails all together.
4. Low Cut
This will eliminate split ends, refresh your look and save hair styling time as a new mother with new responsibilities.
5. Steam often
Hair Steaming should be a part of your hair care regimen as it unclogs the pores in the scalp thereby, encouraging hair growth.
6. Onion juice
Onion juice is great for hair growth. When added to the hair and scalp, it provides extra sulfur to support strong and thick hair. The sulfur in onions helps with collagen production which produces healthy skill cells and hair growth.
7. Take vitamins
Your entire body, not just your hair will thrive from a good dose of daily vitamins. The following vitamins are all you need and they most likely will be added to your postnatal routine so check with your doctor before buying any supplement.

- B-complex vitamins such as Biotin (B7)
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin E

8. Thickening Shampoo instead of conditioning
You can thicken and get the appearance of fuller hair by using a hair volumizing shampoo. What you need is a shampoo that cleans and nourishes your hair at the same time.
9. Eat healthy
Chances are your doctor has already suggested a diet to help with lactation. In addition to eating natural and healthy foods, add foods high in protein to promote hair growth. The good thing is breastfeeding “superfoods” such as whole grains, beef, and salmon, will give your hair follicles an extra boost for faster hair growth. This healthy diet benefits you while providing all the proper nutrition your baby needs for development and growth. Including a variety of fruits, vegetables, and healthy proteins in your diet is the best way to make sure your body is getting all the nutrients it needs. Foods that are suggested by some to improve hair health include dark leafy greens (for the iron and vitamin C), sweet potatoes and carrots (for the beta carotene), eggs (for the vitamin D), and fish (for omega-3s and magnesium).
10. Be Kind to your hair
Treat your hair like that expensive Brazilian hair in your closet. Comb gently, nourish weekly with leave-in conditioner, comb gently with wide toothed comb.
