I know! Worry is part of the package as a new parent. There are definitely things to pay close attention to once the baby comes, but these 8 shouldn’t be on that list.
Here are 8 things we tend to worry about but shouldn’t
1. Soft Spot
I remember going to the hospital (twice actually!) because of my Sonshine’s soft spots. Lol. Have you touched a part of your baby’s head and it felt soft and you got worried you were touching his brain? Don’t worry, you are not alone! Baby’s head soft spots, known as the fontanels, exist because, to safely pass through the narrow birth canal, the baby’s skull needs to be flexible. Just so your little one’s head can come out without any damage to the brain and also less tears for mum.
2. Blood in your newborn girl’s diaper.
Within the first week of life, it is possible for a baby girl to have a mini “period”. During pregnancy, a surge in maternal estrogen levels can stimulate a female fetus’s uterus causing it to shed a little blood. If you notice this, let your baby’s doctor be aware to rule out any cause for concern.
3. A small hollow in baby’s chest.
It is not heart problem, I promise! Experts say the breastbone is made up of three parts. The “dent” you see is most likely the bottom piece, angling backwards. The chest muscle and belly muscle will gradually pull it straight as your baby grows.
4. Soft poops after every feed.
It is not diarrhea. It is nothing out of place for Breastfed babies to poop after each feeding due to quick digestion of breastmilk. Bottle-fed babies may not experience this as it takes a while longer for formula digest.
5. Constant hiccuping.
There is a tell tale that says when your baby is “hiccuping, her stomach is expanding”. Lol! Some experts say babies hiccup so much due to a miscommunication between the brain and the diaphragm, the abdominal muscle that controls breathing. Regardless of their cause, hiccups are a harmless part of babyhood.
6. Crying.
Babies cry a lot and it is normal to worry if we are doing something wrong as new parents. Newborns’ nervous systems are immature and so they get startled easily which causes them to cry at every little thing. So even though the wails sound like he is in a lot of pains, he probably isn’t.
7. Rashes
Rashes usually occurs between 2 weeks and 2 months of age on babies. They are mostly harmless. Read all the different types of rashes in newborn and how to manage them here.
8. Sneezing all the time.
Babies are born with tiny features which includes a teeny-tiny nose! Just a little mucus will tickle and make a baby sneeze and having just passed through “water” in your uterus, it is more than likely to have a little congestion at birth. So don’t worry too much about it except the sneeze is accompanied by mucous or discharge.
