7 Things You Shouldn’t Say To A New Mum

It is easy to assume the “Godmother” role immediately our favourite baby, neice, or nephew is born. We are all guilty of this. We have to make conscious effort not to cross the unspoken boundaries.

These tips will guide you when visiting a newborn.

1. Don’t show up uninvited

Yes you are excited and it is only logically to take off to pay a visit immediately you hear the good news. That’s fantastic but note, that mama is tired. Make sure you double check frankly if it is a good time to visit before going.

2. Stay away if you have a cold

There are over 200 flu viruses and the baby needs to develop immunity to each one of them. Meaning? They will catch a cold if you have it and go visiting. If you are generally unwell, stay away as well. The baby is not strong enough to fight viruses and bacterias just yet.

3. Wash and Sanitize your hands

If no handwash point is mounted at the entrance, ask for it. Make sure you wash and sanitize before you go close to the baby. We unknowingly carry a lot of germs around in our hands.

4. Ask for permission before touching/carrying the baby

Please don’t assume it is fine. Ask!

5. Don’t stay long except you are helping out

Except you are busy with chores and helping the mum, make your visit short so they can get some rest.

6. Don’t snap or post the baby’s pictures on social media

Some people like to keep their lives off social media. Do not snap and share the baby’s pictures without consent.

7. Don’t give unsolicited advise

Except if asked, don’t advise. And even when asked, thread carefully when answering.

8. Don’t call the new mama fat

Yes, she still looks pregnant. Surprise, surprise! Don’t remind her how fat she looks. She is already battling with low self esteem. Don’t add to it.

9. Don’t kiss the baby

Yep! Don’t!

10. Don’t wear strong perfume

It is said to irritate the baby’s nostrils. If you must wear, go mild and easy.
