THE REALITY OF STARTING SOLIDS

More Parents are adopting the Baby-led weaning approach to starting solids. There are a lot of benefits to adopting this process which includes improved motor skills, decreased picky eating and so much more.

When introducing baby to solids to food, texture is key. The first foods you give your new eater should be easy to smash, very soft and cut into bits to prevent chocking hazard. Stay away from nuts, raw or hard fruits and chunk sized meals.

Quick tip

Avoid cutting fruits like avocado and bananas with knife to prevent the slippery feel. Instead,  leave some of the peel on and break into bits with your hand.

5 Foods You Can Start With
1. Soft Fruit

Fruits like banana, peaches and avocado. Cut the fruits into long, easy-to-grasp pieces. Other great options include very ripe pears, melon, and strawberries.

2. Cooked Eggs

Eggs are very nutritious and good for your baby. They are rich in protein, iron and fat which are the important nutrients your baby needs everyday. Babies can enjoy eggs as boiled egg, eat scrambled eggs, or omelets.

3. Meat and Fish

When introducing foods like meat and fish, make sure they are homemade and throughly cooked.

4. Cooked Vegetables

Introduce finger foods like diced carrots and spinach.  Cook with till tender.

5. Toast Sticks

Cut toast into pickable pieces for your baby. You can add spreads on it like butter, or nut butter for some extra nutrition. Toast the bread just lightly to prevent it from becoming too dry.
