5 Skills Your Baby Learns from Story Time

Story time with your little one isn’t all games and fan- yes, it is so much fun but also so much more! Your baby develops a lot of skills from story time.

Here’s how you can help Baby grasp important skills for her future.

You can begin reading to your baby daily once your baby turns 6 months. t, even if your baby is still unable to make sense of what you are reading, her brain still receives the stimulation.

By 12 months, your baby should be exposed to developmental book and at the age of 2, your child is developmentally ready to experience the real pleasure of books.

Skills your baby learns from reading

1. Pointing

As you point at objects and words in the books, your baby follows with hers eyes and gradually grasp the idea of pointing as a means of communication. Don’t be too surprised if your baby starts pointing at objects around him.

2. Sense of Security and Healthy attachment

It is important for your baby to develop secure attachment, which will allow him to comfortably explore his environment and grow socially-competent.

3. Vocabulary

Reading will help your baby expand his vocabulary and expose him to new array of words and their meanings.

4. Speech Sounds

When you read to your child, she hears and listens to the sounds and pitch of your voice as you pronounce each word. She learns to recognize some speech sounds that make up the words and will later imitate the sounds and tones.

5. Focus and attention

Try engaging your child in an interactive, enthusiastic reading and his ability to focus will grow.

For Lagos Mums, here is a list of  book clubs you can join and libraries you can take your toddler to where they can access access to tons of books. If you are outside Lagos, look for a bookshop close to you or library to visit.
