Are you aware that some foods can be unsafe for your child? Here are a few Parents should be conscious of.

Toddlers are always eager to sample food from our plates and we are always excited to have them sample something new. But not all foods you eat are age appropriate for your toddler.

12 to 24 months: What to avoid

1. Low-fat milk

Toddlers need fat and calories to grow. Therefore, whole milk is advised for younger toddlers instead of low-fat milk, except if your child is at risk fro obesity. Once your child turns 2, you can start giving low-fat milk if you want.

2. Large chunks of food

This can cause a choking hazard if the child attempts to swallow the chuck. It can get stuck in the throat. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that you cut food into pieces no larger than 1/2 inch. For fruits like grapes, cherry, strawberries, cut them into quarters. Shred meats and other vegetables before serving.

3. Raw vegetables

This is a no-no. Clean and soft- cook your vegetables before serving. Carrots, broccoli should be cleaned, diced or shredded before giving your child.

4. Nuts and seeds

Careful take out all the seeds in fresh fruits like watermelon, peaches and cherries before serving. The child may not choke on seeds because of the size but it can get stuck in the child’s airway thereby causing an infection.

5. Crunchy foods

Popcorn is delicious but it can cause a chocking hazard for a child less than 2 years.

6. Sticky foods

Jellies, gummy bear candy,  chewing gum, marshmallows can call stick to a child’s throat meaning these can also be a choking hazard.
