If you are pregnant or a new mum, this article is for you. I know it can be weirdly confusing reading thousands (if not millions) of tips from different sources and not knowing which to follow. I understand. I have been there. That’s why I put together this list of 9 Things First Time Mums Should Know About Their Newborns.
These are the basics you should be aware of about your newborn.
1. The Umbilical Cord will fall off on its own
No need to take a trip to the hospital because of the umbilical cord. It will dry out and fall off on its own. You may not even know how, where, or when. It usually falls off within 1 to 2 weeks.
2. Their necks need to be supported- always
Newborns have very delicate body especially the neck as they cannot keep their heads up on their own yet nor have the strength to do so. Ensure you always support your newborn’s neck with your hand during feeding, or when carrying them from the crib.
3. Their Fingernails grow really fast
You cut t today and tomorrow it feels and looks like you didn’t. Their nails grow very fast and they could end up scratching their faces and body if not quickly trimmed.
4. They can recognize and smell you
Your baby knows your voice and your smell and even without saying a word, just hugging them will give them a sense of safety. Cute right? 🙂
5. Ensure they pass gas after each feed
Passing gas is very important either by burping or farting. It releases the air trapped in their belly which can cause them discomfort, colic and make them become very cranky.
6. You will know if your baby is getting enough breastmilk
One of the biggest concerns for new parents; mums especially is worrying if their baby is getting enough breastmilk. Babies need to feed every 2-3 hours so don’t use their clutter feeding to judge and assume they are not getting enough milk. Your baby’s weight is a good indicator to check if they are gaining weight appropriately.
7. Dry Skin is totally normal
Imagine being in a pool for 9 months straight. Your skin will most likely lose its oil and dry out. The same thing happens to the baby. Their skin may dry out, start peeling or look irritated. You don’t need to apply anything as it will normalize with time. If you are super worried about it, get a hypoallergenic baby lotion to moisturize the skin,
8. Weight loss is normal
It’s not unusual for your baby to lose some weight in her first week of life. Don’t worry, she’ll regain it by the second week. Babies are born with some extra fluid, so it’s normal for them to drop a few ounces.
9. The soft spot on their heads can handle some touching
I know it looks like it will break in if you touch it. I promise it won’t. It can actually handle some handling. The soft spot, also called the fontanel is a small opening in the skull which allows your baby to maneuver out of the birth canal easily.
