Galactogogues are foods or herbs that have been purported to boost breast milk supply.
Different cultures and traditions have herbs and superfoods that have been used over time to help women breastfeed. Nigeria is no different. Nigeria is a land rich with green and forage. The land is truly green here. From my experience as a lactation expert, the major challenge that breastfeeding Mums face on their breastfeeding journey is low milk supply.
The WHO estimates that only 23 countries in the world have achieved over 60% exclusive breastfeeding rates, and Nigeria isn’t one of them. We aren’t even close at all. The major contributing factor is none other than low milk supply. What if I told you that if you walked into your kitchen right now, you probably have up to 3 food items that can boost your supply? Don’t believe me? See for yourself!
Here’s a list of common galactagogues:
1. Pap
Standard practice in most Nigerian homes. A new mum is given pap to take in place of water. Whoever discovered this must truly be a genius. People say the lighter the pap, the better. A bowl of pap a day…keeps baby’s cry away.
2. Garlic
Have you ever heard the saying that garlic is good for ‘everything’? I’m beginning to think it’s true. Garlic is a good galactagogue. Best taken fresh or combined with the next milk booster
3. Ginger:
Wherever you see Garlic, ginger is usually not far away. Both are besties. Grate a clove of garlic with a thumb of ginger and pour in a glass of warm water. Your baby will thank you.
4. Oats
Oats have to be the most common galactagogue ever! Rich in fibre and filled with numerous health benefits, a bowl of oats is a breastfeeding Mama’s joy.
5. Tiger Nut
Yep, you heard that right! It’s not only good for you-know-what. Tiger nuts are also great for your milk supply. They’re cheap and readily available.
6. Nuts
Nuts are packed with fatty acids and high calories. Three servings of almonds have been shown to increase milk supply and also improve the fat content of breast milk as well.
7. Moringa
Moringa is hands down the superfood of the year! Studies have shown an increase of up to 100% in breast milk supply when used consistently. It’s no wonder it’s an ingredient in some of our treats. All you need is 2 tablespoons of the powder to get you going.
So how many of these amazing foods do you already have in your kitchen? See, I told You!
