Post-immunization fever is quite common for babies and so is crankiness. These 5 tips will help you manage your baby after a shot.
Most new mums dread immunization (including me!). No Mum wants to see her little one(s) in pain. These are the most common side effects and how to manage them.
1. Fever
Slight fever is quite normal in the first 48 hours after immunization shot. PCM (Paracetamol drop) may be given every 4 hours to reduce the high temperature and pain.
2. Lump under the skin where the injection was given
If you notice a lump under the skin layer where the shot was given, it is due to bleeding under the skin. It may take several weeks for the body to reabsorb the blood. The lump may persist, but it is not permanent.
3.Your baby may be extra sleepy in the first 48 hours after the vaccines.
This is normal as long as your baby is waking to feed.
4. Your baby may experience redness at the site of the injection.
This may last 3-4 days and is more likely with each successive round of vaccines. Warm compresses, bathing and Paracetamol may soothe any discomfort.
5. Your baby may experience irritability & crankiness in the first 48 hours after the vaccines.
Paracetamol may be given every 4 hours for discomfort. It is advised you breastfeed more to comfort your baby (for breastfeeding mums).
6. Your baby may be extra sleepy in the first 48 hours after the vaccines.
This is normal as long as your baby is waking to feed.
