I did a post last week on 8 items that were my life-saver as a new mum and thought to do a part 2 of the items I didn’t quite enjoy. If you missed the post on the 8 best items I loved, you can catch up here.
As a new mum-to-be who didn’t want to be overloaded with a lot of extra junk, I tried to research all the baby items that were absolute musts for newborns. I made careful notes and was judicious in purchasing. Turns out that some of those must haves just did not apply to us at all. Like almost everything to do with baby, so much depends on what kind of mum you are and what kind of baby you have. The items that were life savers for other mums ended up being complete wastes of space for some of us. So perhaps useless would be the wrong term. Let’s just say that these were least loved items I had stocked up on and ended up not finding all that critical. With that in mind, I give you … The Top 5 Most Useless Least Loved Baby Items. LOL
Please note: This is my personal experience and review of the products. Because these items are a skip for me doesn’t mean they can’t be a buy for you.
1. Pacifier
My Sonshine never liked it. Now I am glad he didn’t, because I have heard breaking the pacifier habit can be hectic sometimes.
- A pacifier might soothe a fussy baby. Some babies are happiest when they’re sucking on something. So it is up to you to use it or not (or rather up to your baby to accept it or not. LOL).
2.Crib bumper and bedding
Crib bumpers are a complete skip for me, not only do you not need them, they also pose danger to your child. You actually shouldn’t have them in your baby’s cot. The American Academy of Pediatrics says crib bumpers and other loose bedding can be a suffocation hazard for baby and should never be placed in the crib when baby is sleeping. When nap or nighttime rolls around, the only things that should be in the crib are a fitted sheet and your child.
3.Bottle Sterilizer
It used to be that parents sterilized their baby bottles after every feeding. Dropping the bottles and parts into boiling water on the stove/gas cooker for a few minutes works just as well—no special bottle sterilizer needed- except you really want it.
4. Multipurpose Bag & Bed Travel Cot
This wasn’t quite useful as a bag as you only have the side compartment to keep things. Where do you empty them when you want to unfold as a bed? And my baby never really found it comfortable as a bed either. The “walls” don’t stay up so the baby is never really at rest in the bed and need I say the quality is bad? . So it’s a No-no for me. Read product reviews from other mums here.
5. Feeding pillow
No denying the fact that a feeding pillow makes nursing ‘more comfortable’. But if you are working on a budget, you can conveniently skip this item and you won’t miss it. They’re not a necessity. A lot of mums don’t even remember to use them. They simply grab the nearest pillow or throw pillow to them. Once you become an ‘expert’ at breastfeeding, you can even breastfeed while walking. It’s a talent!. Lol.
