5 Steps to Potty Training Success

Potty training can be daunting for new parents and the signs of readiness can be a little tricky.

Here are some factors to consider and realistic check-ins  if you are thinking of potty training.

1. Are we stable right now?

If you are moving houses or you have a newborn, now might not be the best time to introduce potty training to your toddler as you are both not stable. Make sure everything is calm when introducing potty training so you can both focus on it without distractions.

2. Has my child shown any interest so far?

Another key factor to consider is the child’s interest in potty training.  A child is only ready when he is ready. I have listed below the most common signs of readiness.

3. Am I mentally ready for the accidents and regression that may occur?

With potty training, accidents are inevitable and so are regressions and you have to be mentally ready not to take it out on the child.

4. How old is my child?

Most children are ready between 22 months – 36 months. Is your child within this window? If your child is over 3 years, he is most likely ready for potty training.

5. Am I ready for night take ins?

Night potty training is a different ball game entirely.  Are you ready to wake up multiple times at night right now? If you are able to, go for it!

Common signs of readiness

1. Pulling at wet or dirty diaper

2. Seeking privacy or hiding to pee or poop.

3. Imitating others going to the toilet and copying what they are doing.

4. Telling you they are about to poop or wee in their diaper. Some kids tell you after they have, or use body language.

5. Diaper change struggle

6. Dry diaper often after naps

7. Interest in potty and other toilet activities like flushing, hand washing, etc

7. She poops and wee on a predictable schedule.

8. He can say “Pee” and “Poo”

9. She can sit and stand from the potty.
