DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONE: TALKING

I always look forward to the talking milestone because that means Parents can finally understand what the kids want and not keep wondering what they are thinking per time but this also means they will never stop talking again.

Babies’ vocabulary is developed by the words they hear spoken to them by their parents and care-givers. This means the talking milestone also requires their ability to listen and then respond.

Did you know? Babies can hear in utero before they even have ears!

Laying the foundation for babies to start talking

Talking to your baby before birth might seem weird but it’s better to start talking to your unborn baby to get in the habit.

This builds a strong foundation for communication skills.

Babies start making cooing sounds by month three after birth and saying few words such as “da-da-da-da between 6- 12 months (Don’t be offended mama, it is just an easier word to say. Lol). Usually around 12 months, a lot of babies can make the “p”, “b”, and “m” sounds. They can also respond to their name, say the word no, and using lots of understandable gestures to communicate.

Between 12 and 24 months, babies can say 40-50 words, but understanding 300 words or more.

The more words your baby understands, the more words he can say! So start talking to your baby as much as possible, sing, read, narrate stories of how your day went to your infant to help develop his word bank.

Between 12 months – 24 months, babies also start combining two-word phrases such as “more milk” .

It is important to note that this is just a guide and early speech development is different for every child, so don’t  compare your child to anybody else’s.

What other tips helped your baby during this developmental milestone? Please share with us.
