I guess you practically know how many weeks, days, and possibly hours to your due date (who’s counting? LOL!). The long-awaited final month is near and now every sign, symptoms and those thoughts in your head will land you on search engines asking if they are signs of labour.
All you really need is a sign from your champ that he or she is ready to meet you. Here are the telltale signs you need to know that your baby is on its way out. Don’t bank too much on your due date, only a small number of women — 5 percent, according to some figures — deliver on their given due date.
The 5 signs of labour you should watch out for
1. Your cervix dilates
As your body prepares for delivery, your cervix starts to open up and thin out in the days or weeks leading up to the birth of your precious one. Your midwife or doctor can monitor your progress. The aim is to reach 9-10cm dilation.
2. You lose your mucous plug
Your mucous plug can be dislodged once in form of a large globe or can come in small amounts. Either way, once you lose your mucous plug, be sure your body is getting ready for the impending birth.
3. Bloody show
This is simply mucous tingled with blood. This can only mean one thing, labour is imminent. If you are a first-time mum, you may want to head to the hospital now as contractions will kick in any moment now.
4. Water breaks
Some women experience a leak and gradually flow of water when their water breaks while others swear by the pop sound followed by a loud gush. If your water breaks, you almost can’t miss it.
5. Contractions
Doctors say you are ready when your contractions are 5 minutes apart, each lasting for one minute and continues for one hour. When your contractions kick in, chances are you are not even ready to go and not fully dilated. But once they start happening close together, it’s time!
