Let’s Talk Colic

Dealing With Colic?

What is Colic?

My Sonshine was barely 5 weeks old the day my mum left. We dropped her off at the park and as we got back home boom! Colic struck. I felt helpless. Watching him letting out ear-shattering wails, arching his back, flaring his legs and pulling his knees to his stomach while giving me that pity look was heartbreaking for me.

What is Colic?

Colic is simply trapped gas that causes severe pain in the abdomen of infants.

I had read and heard enough about Colic to know my worst fear was really happening. I felt so confused. What will I do? I sat there by his side trying to calm him down and cried along with him.🙈 To think he was the most peaceful and quiet child just a minute ago! I didn’t understand it.

Doctors diagnose Colic based on “rules of three”. If a baby is crying for at least 3 hours at a stretch, 3 times a week for at least 3 weeks in a row, he is said to be colicky.

I practiced every rule in the book I had read but nothing worked (or so I thought at that time). What worked was Time honestly.

Over time, I have learned what works for me..well and him. Regardless of what any doctor tells me today, I am sure of the following (For my baby o), 1. Egg and dairy increase the chances of his colic striking again.

2. Soft drink is almost a sure banker. Once I take a bottle of drink and breastfeed, it’s almost instant.

What did I do?
1. Bicycle motion with his legs till he lets out the wind.

2. Rubbing his stomach in a clockwise direction
3. Gripe water (this helped a bit). 4. Garlic- water solution

5. Applying pressure to his stomach.

None of the above activities stopped colic from happening once in a while but they did help suppress the pain while it was happening.

Mums, is your baby colicky or do you know any baby who is? How did you manage the situation?
