If you have been wondering “Why does my toddler grind her teeth in her sleep?”. This article is for you.
Teeth grinding (Bruxism) is a very common night-time habit especially when toddlers are teething. If your toddler grinds his teeth, don’t make a fuss out of it. Instead, use a low-key approach. Making a big deal out of it may make your toddler anxious, which definitely will make the grinding worse. Give her time, and she’ll probably grow out of it on her own.
The most common reasons why children grind their teeth
1. Their upper and lower jaws are growing at a different rate, resulting in an overbite or an underbite.
2. Pain, from teething or an ear infection, can also lead some toddlers to grind their teeth.
3. Anxiety: If you think your toddler may be grinding her teeth because she’s anxious or worried about something, talk it over with her.
4. Curiosity: Some toddlers grind their teeth simply because they’ve figured out that they can and are curious about the sound it makes. They’re intrigued by the new sound and feeling, so they try it out.
What to do?
1. You can talk to your health provider if you have any concerns about your toddler’s emotional health.
2. If you do hear them grinding during the day, and the habit is continuing, it’s okay to point it out and ask them stop doing it.
3. Don’t make a big deal out of it. They will outgrow it.
