Period After Delivery: Here’s What To Expect
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

One of the most common questions I receive from new mums and mums-to-be is, when will my period return? Honestly, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this query. However, here are a few factors that can influence how soon or how late the period will be.

When will my period return?

Your period will most likely return between six to eight weeks after you give birth if you are not breastfeeding. Again, you can breastfeed and have it return in the same stipulated time. But most of the time, if you do exclusive breastfeeding,  you might not have a period the entire time you breastfeed for.

Quick Tip:

If your period returns immediately after a vaginal delivery, your doctor might recommend that you stay away from tampons during your first menstruation because you are still healing.

What should I expect from my first period postpartum?

It is normal to bleed for the first few weeks after childbirth, and the blood might be heavier and appear in clots. As time goes on, this blood reduces and finally stops at around 6 weeks which is about the time your period may return.

Quick Tip

If your discharge stops for a while, and then you start bleeding again, it is most likely your period.

Here’s how to tell if it’s your period or not.

Bright red bleeding: Bright Red Bleeding that occurs around six weeks after delivery is more likely to be your period as old blood from a delivery would have thinned out into clear body fluid by now. It will take a while for your period to regulate so don’t panic if you miss a few periods. Just ensure you have family planning if you are not looking to get pregnant again soon.
